  • Many Woody Weeds in Australia are Weeds of National Significance (WONS) including:
    • African boxthorn
    • Athel pine
    • Mesquite
    • Parkinsonia
    • Prickly acacia
  • Common impacts of woody weeds include:
    • Invasiveness
    • Potential to spread
    • Economic and environmental impacts
    • Reduced pasture for stock
  • Added impacts of spiny woody weeds (e.g. African boxthorn, Mesquite, Parkinsonia, Prickly acacia) include:
    • Creation of spiny thickets preventing stock movement
    • Prevention of stock access to waterpoints
    • Harbour for feral pests (e.g. rabbits, foxes, pigs)
    • Injury to stock and native fauna
    • Difficulty in mustering stock
  • Added impacts of Athel pine include:
    • Increased surface soil salinity preventing growth of desirable pasture species
    • Using valuable water resources and contributing to drying of waterholes
    • Rusting of infrastructure beneath trees (e.g. fences, sheds, farm machinery)
Woody weeds are detrimental because they grow aggressively and rapidly, outcompeting native plants, reducing biodiversity, and degrading ecosystems, they also negatively impact agriculture by reducing productive land, hindering livestock access, and harbouring pests.
